The recovery playbook

Abandoned cart recovery for Shopify, done right

Roughly seven in ten carts never become orders. This guide compares the recovery channels honestly, gives you the timing sequence that works, and shows what to measure — so the leak becomes revenue.

The leak

Why carts get abandoned

Cart abandonment is not a rejection of your product — study after study finds the same culprits, and most have nothing to do with what's in the cart:

  • Surprise costs. Shipping, taxes, and fees appearing late in checkout — the single biggest killer.
  • Forced accounts. "Create an account to continue" loses buyers who just wanted to buy.
  • Checkout friction. Long forms and too many steps, magnified on mobile.
  • Life happened. The doorbell rang. The train arrived. Intent was real; the moment passed.

That last category is why recovery works at all: a large share of abandoners still want the product. They need a nudge in a channel they'll actually see — fast, while the intent is warm.

Channel choice

WhatsApp vs email vs SMS for cart recovery

The channels differ less in what they say than in whether anyone sees it — and how fast.

The honest summary: email is nearly free but mostly unseen; SMS is seen but cramped and one-way; WhatsApp is seen and rich and conversational, at a modest per-conversation fee. For recovery — where speed decides the outcome — visibility wins.

The sequence

The 3-message timing playbook

Recovery is a sequence, not a single blast. The pattern that consistently performs, and ships as Recoverly's default:

  • 30 minutes — the friendly nudge. No pressure, no discount. Just the cart link while intent is hot. This message does most of the recovering.
  • 2 hours — honest urgency. Low stock, popular item, or free-shipping reminder. Give the fence-sitter a reason to decide today.
  • 24 hours — the last chance. Now the discount, if you use one at all. It only reaches carts the first two messages didn't close.
  • Zero messages after purchase. The moment the order completes, the rest of the sequence cancels. Nagging a buyer costs more than a lost cart.

Measurement

Measure recovered revenue, not vibes

A recovery setup you can't measure is a cost center you can't defend. Three numbers tell the whole story:

  • Recovered revenue. Orders completed after a reminder was sent for that exact checkout — attributed per reminder, in currency.
  • Conversion to recovered order. Of the shoppers messaged, how many came back and bought. Recoverly shows this as a single ring.
  • Read rate per reminder. Real Meta read receipts, per message — so you know whether copy or timing is the thing to tune.

FAQ

Cart recovery, asked and answered

The recurring reasons across ecommerce studies: unexpected costs at checkout (shipping, taxes, fees), being forced to create an account, long or confusing checkouts, payment worries, and simple distraction — especially on mobile. A recovery sequence exists because most abandoners were genuinely interested; they just need a low-friction way back.
Email recovery campaigns typically win back a few percent of abandoned carts. WhatsApp-based recovery reaches up to 25% for many stores, because messages hit a ~98% open rate within minutes of the abandonment, while purchase intent is still warm.
30 minutes after abandonment is the sweet spot for the first WhatsApp reminder — fast enough that intent is hot, slow enough not to interrupt someone who is still deciding. A common full sequence: 30 minutes (friendly nudge), 2 hours (urgency), 24 hours (last chance, optionally with a discount).
Not in the first message. Leading with a discount trains customers to abandon carts on purpose. Save the code for the final message of the sequence, and only for carts that urgency alone didn't close.
Cart reminders are sent to shoppers who entered their phone number at checkout, under Shopify's checkout consent. Every message carries an instant exit — replying STOP halts the sequence and all future messages immediately.
Honest attribution ties a completed order to the exact checkout that a reminder was sent for. Recoverly counts an order as recovered only when it completes after a recovery reminder for that same checkout — and shows the revenue per reminder, per day, in your store's currency.

Your checkout is leaking revenue right now.

Recoverly's cart recovery sets up in about 3 minutes — with this exact playbook as the default.
