What a WhatsApp QR code is

A WhatsApp QR code is a standard QR code that contains a click-to-chat link (https://wa.me/<number>?text=...). When someone scans it with their phone camera, WhatsApp opens a conversation with your number, optionally with a message already typed. It is not the same as the login code on WhatsApp Web, which changes constantly and only links a browser to your phone.

Where businesses use WhatsApp QR codes

  • Packaging and inserts: “Questions about your order? Scan to chat.” Pre-fill the order context so support starts fast.
  • Restaurant menus and tables: reservations, allergen questions, takeaway orders.
  • Shop windows and counters: after-hours enquiries, appointment bookings, stock checks.
  • Flyers, posters, vehicle wraps: lead capture for real estate, clinics, home services.
  • Receipts and invoices: review requests and reorders.
  • Events and trade-show badges: one scan replaces the business-card exchange.

Static vs dynamic codes

The code you download here is static: the wa.me link is baked into the image, so it works forever without any third-party service. If you expect to change the number or want scan analytics, print a code that points to a redirect on your own domain (for example yourbrand.com/chat) and point that redirect at the wa.me link. You can then change the destination without reprinting.

Design and print tips

  1. Dark code on a white background. Green on white works; light green on white does not.
  2. Export at 1024 px or more for print and never scale the image up.
  3. Keep a quiet zone (white margin) of at least four modules around the code.
  4. Add a one-line call to action next to it: “Scan to chat with us on WhatsApp”.
  5. Test with an iPhone and an Android phone from a meter away before you print.

Usually low contrast (light colors), a code printed too small, a glossy reflection, or the code was shrunk after export so its modules blurred. Use black or dark green on white, export at 1024 px or more, and never stretch the image.
