WhatsApp coexistence mode, explained

The Meta feature that lets your WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp API share one number — so you get automation without giving up your phone, your chats, or the number customers know.

The problem it solves

The old trade-off: automation or your app

Until coexistence, connecting a number to the WhatsApp Business Platform meant the app on your phone stopped working for that number. Merchants had to choose: keep chatting from the app they know, or hand the number to an API tool and lose the app (and usually the chat history with it). Many bought a second SIM just to automate.

Coexistence removes the choice. Meta lets the API attach to your number the way WhatsApp Web does — as a linked device. The app keeps working. The API sends automations. Both see the same conversations.

  • Your number. The one on your business cards, your packaging, and in your customers' contacts.
  • Your app. Keep answering chats from your phone exactly as before.
  • Your history. Existing conversations import, and merchant replies sync into the connected tool's inbox.

How linking works — about two minutes

Coexistence connects through Meta's official Embedded Signup flow. In Recoverly it looks like this:

  • 1 · Continue with Meta. A Meta popup opens; log in with the Facebook account that owns your business.
  • 2 · Confirm your number. Pick the WhatsApp Business number your customers already message.
  • 3 · Scan the QR code. Because the number lives on your WhatsApp Business app, Meta shows a QR — scan it from Settings › Linked devices, exactly like linking WhatsApp Web.
  • Done. History imports, sync begins, and your automations can go live the moment a template is approved.

What to know before you link

  • Voice and video calls pause. While a number is linked in coexistence, Meta disables WhatsApp calls on it. Messaging — app and API — is unaffected. This is Meta's rule, not the tool's.
  • Ownership matters. The Facebook account you log in with must own the business in Meta Business Manager, and the business should be verified. Most connection errors trace back to this.
  • Quality rating still rules. Meta scores your number green / yellow / red. A good tool shows the rating and pauses sending on red — Recoverly does both automatically.
  • Throughput is generous. Coexistence supports roughly 20 messages per second — orders of magnitude above what store automations actually need.

FAQ

Coexistence questions, answered

Coexistence mode is Meta's way of letting one WhatsApp Business number run in two places at once: your WhatsApp Business app keeps working on your phone, while the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) sends automations through the same number. You link them by scanning a QR code — like adding a second device.
Not with coexistence. Your chat history imports into the connected tool, and new conversations stay in sync both ways — replies you send from your phone appear in the tool's inbox, and automated sends show up alongside your manual chats.
One meaningful limit, set by Meta: while a number is linked to the platform in coexistence, WhatsApp voice and video calls are disabled on it. Messaging is unaffected. Coexistence throughput is capped around 20 messages per second — far above what a store's automations need.
A classic API-only connection takes the number away from the phone app entirely — your WhatsApp Business app stops working for that number, and history doesn't come along. Coexistence keeps both alive and in sync, which is why it's the right default for merchants who live in their WhatsApp app.
Through a tool that supports it (Recoverly does): click 'Continue with Meta', log in with the Facebook account that owns your business, confirm your number, and — if the number is on your WhatsApp Business app — scan the QR code Meta shows from Settings › Linked devices. The whole flow takes about two minutes.

Keep your number. Keep your app. Add superpowers.
