The Twilio WhatsApp alternative for teams without developers

Twilio is a developer platform: a WhatsApp API you call from your own code, billed per message on top of Meta's fees. Recoverly is the no-code route to the same WhatsApp Business Platform. Connect your number, switch on ready-made automations, let the AI chatbot answer, and handle replies in a shared inbox, all for one flat monthly price.

Why teams move from Twilio to Recoverly

Nothing to build or host

With Twilio, every WhatsApp message is an API call from software you write and maintain, or a flow you assemble in Twilio Studio. Recoverly ships the builder, templates, AI chatbot and inbox, so a marketer can go live in an afternoon.

No per-message platform fee

Twilio's fee is listed at $0.005 per WhatsApp message, sent or received, on top of Meta's fees (Twilio WhatsApp pricing page, Sep 2026). Recoverly is $19 or $49 per month with no markup; Meta bills its own fees to you at cost.

Keep the WhatsApp Business app

Twilio's sign-up guide says to delete the WhatsApp account on a number before registering it. Recoverly connects in coexistence mode, so the app on your phone keeps working on the same number.

Twilio figures come from twilio.com/en-us/whatsapp/pricing (marked current as of August 2026), Twilio's Flex and Serverless pricing pages and its WhatsApp Self Sign-up guide, read September 29, 2026. Meta's per-message fees apply on both platforms and vary by category and country.

Who Twilio is right for

Twilio is one of the most established communications platforms, and for teams with engineers it offers control that no packaged app can match. One API and one bill cover WhatsApp, SMS, RCS, voice and email, plus WhatsApp Business Calling, a sandbox for prototyping, a Senders API for registering numbers in code, a Tech Provider program for software vendors, and Flex for building a contact center. If you are embedding WhatsApp in your own product, sending one-time passcodes at volume, or routing conversations across channels with custom logic, Twilio is the better choice.

Who switches to Recoverly

Businesses that started on Twilio and found that every message, screen and report has to be built and maintained in-house: a store whose integration was written by a freelancer who has moved on, a clinic that wants reminders and an inbox without licensing a contact center, an owner who wants to keep answering from the WhatsApp Business app.

  • Flat pricing: $19/mo for automations, the AI chatbot and the inbox; $49/mo adds campaigns and integrations.
  • Ready-made flows for carts, COD, orders, shipping, reviews, back in stock, appointments and lead follow-up.
  • Coexistence: keep your number and the app on your phone.
  • No code: Shopify data syncs automatically; webhook triggers, Zapier and Shopify Flow cover the rest on Pro.

What you give up

Recoverly is not a programmable messaging API. There are no SDKs, no SMS, voice or email, no WhatsApp calling, and one WhatsApp number per workspace. Webhook triggers, Zapier and Shopify Flow cover most integrations, but if WhatsApp has to live inside your own software, stay with Twilio or call Meta's Cloud API directly. The web app for businesses outside Shopify is in early access.

How to move from Twilio without losing a conversation

01

List what your code sends today

Write down each WhatsApp message your Twilio integration sends and the event behind it. Orders, carts, shipping, reminders and reviews map to ready-made Recoverly automations; one-time passcodes and product-specific messages are better left on an API.

02

Free the number

Remove the number from the WhatsApp Business Account connected to Twilio (Meta requires two-step verification to be turned off before a number moves), then connect it to Recoverly with Embedded Signup. If you rent the number from Twilio, keep it active so it can receive Meta's verification code.

03

Recreate templates and go live

Submit your templates in Recoverly, where Meta approval is handled in the app, switch on the matching automations and send yourself a test before you turn off the old code.

FAQ

Twilio alternative: your questions

Usually, yes. Twilio lists a $0.005 fee on every WhatsApp message, sent or received, on top of Meta's fees, so 20,000 messages a month is $100 in Twilio fees alone. A shared inbox means adding Flex, from $1 per active user hour. Recoverly is $19 or $49 a month with no per-message fee. The larger saving is engineering time. At very high volumes with an in-house team, Twilio's volume discounts can change the math.
Twilio charges its own fee per message (listed at $0.005 for inbound and outbound on its pricing page in September 2026), $0.001 for each failed message, and passes through Meta's fee, which depends on the template category and the recipient's country. Studio flows and Flex seats are billed separately. With Recoverly you pay a flat plan and Meta bills its fees to you directly.
Yes. Remove it from the WhatsApp Business Account that Twilio uses, connect it through Meta's Embedded Signup in Recoverly, and resubmit your templates. A number rented from Twilio must stay active to receive the verification code.
If it sends order updates, cart or appointment reminders, review requests or campaigns, and a team answers the replies, yes: those are built in. One-time passcodes and messages generated by your own product logic belong on Twilio or Meta's Cloud API, since Recoverly offers webhook triggers, Zapier and Shopify Flow but no SDKs.
No. The Shopify app is live and Built for Shopify; the web app, in early access, connects any WhatsApp Business number for clinics, salons, real estate, education, travel and more.
