WhatsApp Business account banned? What it means and what to do

Seeing 'This phone number can't use WhatsApp' on your business number is alarming, but the exact message tells you a lot. This guide explains the three levels of enforcement in the WhatsApp Business app, the separate system for the API, why numbers get banned, how to request a review and how to keep it from happening again. Nobody can promise an unban: only WhatsApp decides.

What to do if your WhatsApp Business account is banned

If your WhatsApp Business account is banned, open the app on that phone and tap Request review. WhatsApp says most reviews finish within 24 hours, and you get a notification with the decision. If there is no review option, the ban is final. Bans usually follow spam reports, bulk or automated messaging, or an unofficial WhatsApp app.

Nobody can sell you an unban. WhatsApp states that third-party services can't ban or unban an account; only WhatsApp can. Contacting WhatsApp outside the in-app review, or through someone else's account, won't speed up the review or change the result.

Restricted, temporarily banned or banned: read the message

WhatsApp uses three levels of enforcement in its apps, and the message on your screen tells you which one you hit.

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
'Your account is restricted right now' or 'may be restricted soon'Recent activity looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging. You can still chat with people you've talked to before, but you can't start new chats, create groups, add members or use linked devices.Nothing to file. It lifts automatically after a set time; start a chat with someone new to see the time left. Stop whatever caused it.
'Temporarily banned'You are using an unofficial version of WhatsApp or scraping user information.Uninstall the unofficial app, install the official WhatsApp Business app and register again. If you continue, the ban can become permanent.
'This phone number can't use WhatsApp'A ban for breaking the Terms of Service, for example spam, scams or putting users at risk.Tap Request review. No review option means the ban is final.

While a number is banned you can't open its chats or backups; a backup only becomes available if the number is unbanned. A banned account also loses any Meta Verified subscription. On the API, enforcement works differently, as covered below.

Why WhatsApp bans business numbers

WhatsApp combines machine learning with reports from users to find accounts that send unwanted messages. The patterns that get business numbers banned are predictable:

  • Unofficial apps. WhatsApp names GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp and TM WhatsApp as examples. Linking your account to an unofficial client counts too, and that is how many 'WhatsApp API' gateways work: they connect by showing their own QR code, the way WhatsApp Web does.
  • Bulk or automated messaging from the app. WhatsApp's responsible-use rules say not to bulk message, auto-message or auto-dial, and not to create accounts or groups in automated ways. Bulk-sender browser extensions fall squarely here.
  • Messaging people who didn't ask. Bought, rented or scraped lists produce blocks and reports. When someone blocks a business, one of the reasons WhatsApp offers is 'Didn't sign up'.
  • Heavy broadcast list use. Broadcasts only reach people who saved your number, and WhatsApp warns that frequent broadcasts lead to reports and that it bans accounts reported multiple times.
  • Scraping. Automated collection of phone numbers, profile photos or statuses breaks the Terms of Service.
  • Policy violations. Scams, misleading content, or selling items the WhatsApp Commerce Policy doesn't allow.
  • A new number with sudden volume. WhatsApp publishes no thresholds, but a fresh number that starts messaging hundreds of people who never saved it matches the pattern its systems look for.

How to unban a WhatsApp Business account: request a review

  1. Open WhatsApp Business on the phone with the banned number. The ban screen appears when the app opens.
  2. Tap Request review. If the app asks for details, keep them short and factual: what the business does, how customers get your number and what you have changed.
  3. Wait for WhatsApp's notification. You can check the status by opening the app. Each appeal covers one phone number.
  4. If the ban is lifted, you'll see 'This account can now use WhatsApp'. Verify your number again and restore your backup.
  5. If the decision stands, or no review option appears, the ban is final.

WhatsApp has a contact form, but its help center is clear that contacting support outside the in-app review won't expedite it or change the outcome. If the ban is lifted, fix the cause before you message anyone: WhatsApp says it can reinstate a ban when the activity continues.

How long does a WhatsApp ban last?

  • Restriction: ends automatically after a set period. The app shows the time remaining and notifies you when it ends.
  • Temporary ban: WhatsApp's help center publishes no fixed length. What it does say: switch to the official app or stop scraping, or the ban may become permanent.
  • Ban: permanent unless a review reverses it. Most reviews finish within 24 hours.
  • API restrictions: 1 or 3 days at first, then 5, 7 or 30 days, then an indefinite account lock that only a successful appeal removes.

Bans and restrictions on the WhatsApp Business API

If your number runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, WhatsApp Support doesn't handle bans; enforcement and appeals run through Meta. Meta enforces its Business Messaging Policy, Commerce Policy and Business Terms of Service in steps:

  1. A warning that names the policy you broke.
  2. A 1 or 3 day block on marketing, utility and authentication templates and on adding phone numbers.
  3. A 5, 7 or 30 day block on sending any messages and adding numbers.
  4. An account lock: an indefinite block on all messages that only an appeal can remove.
  5. Permanent removal from the platform if nothing changes after repeated warnings.

Severe harms such as scams, child exploitation, terrorism or illegal drug sales lead to immediate offboarding, and heavy negative feedback from users can also limit or remove a business. Template misclassification, such as marketing content sent as a utility template, is a violation in its own right.

Notices arrive in Business Support Home, as a banner in Business Manager, by email to admins and by webhook. To appeal, open Business Support Home, select the account, click Request Review on the violation and add supporting details. Meta says decisions typically take 24 to 48 hours and end as Unchanged or Reversed. Some spam violations can't be appealed, so you wait out the restriction.

Prevention checklist for business numbers

  • Use only the official WhatsApp Business app, or the official API through a Meta partner. Official API connections run through Meta's own signup window, so be wary of any tool that links your number by showing its own QR code.
  • Message people who gave you their number and asked to hear from you, and record when and where they opted in.
  • Let customers start the conversation with a chat button, a click-to-chat link or a QR code at the counter.
  • Keep broadcast lists small, relevant and infrequent. Our guide to the WhatsApp broadcast limit covers the numbers.
  • Honor 'stop' and 'no thanks' immediately, and remove the contact from your lists.
  • Never buy, rent or scrape lists.
  • Keep a complete profile: real business name, logo, description and website.
  • Warm up a new number with conversations customers start before you send anything outbound.
  • On the API, check your quality rating and block reasons after every campaign.

Why the official API is the safe route for volume

The WhatsApp Business app is built for one-to-one chats. To message hundreds or thousands of customers, the API is the sanctioned route, and it comes with guardrails that keep numbers healthy:

  • Opt-in and templates. Business-initiated messages need opt-in, and outside the 24-hour customer service window they must use a Meta-approved template.
  • A visible quality rating. Meta rates each number green, yellow or red based on the last 7 days of feedback, and shows block reasons such as 'Didn't sign up' or 'Spam'.
  • Messaging limits that grow with trust. New business portfolios start at 250 unique people per 24 hours and step up to 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited as you send quality messages.
  • Per-user marketing limits. Meta caps how many marketing messages each person receives from all businesses, based on how they engage, so blasting unengaged contacts simply fails to deliver.

Recoverly is an official Meta Tech Provider: every message goes through the WhatsApp Business Platform, with no unofficial gateways. It shows your quality rating and pauses sending on red, sends campaigns in staggered waves, sends marketing only to opted-in contacts and honors STOP instantly and permanently. With coexistence, you keep the Business app on your phone. No tool can guarantee a number will never be restricted; the point is to stay well inside the rules.

FAQ

Questions this guide gets asked

WhatsApp bans accounts it believes break its Terms of Service, most often for spam, bulk or automated messaging, unofficial apps, scraping or scams. Its systems use both machine learning and reports from users, so messages people didn't expect are a common trigger.
Open the WhatsApp Business app on the banned number and tap Request review. If WhatsApp decides the ban was a mistake, you'll see 'This account can now use WhatsApp' and can verify your number again. If no review option appears, the ban is final and can't be appealed.
WhatsApp says most reviews of app bans are completed within 24 hours. For API accounts, Meta says appeals filed in Business Support Home typically take 24 to 48 hours.
It usually means the number is running an unofficial version of WhatsApp, such as GB WhatsApp, or scraping user data. Uninstall the unofficial app, install the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app and register again. If the activity continues, the ban can become permanent.
'Your account is restricted' is a temporary limit on starting new chats that ends by itself. 'This phone number can't use WhatsApp' is a ban. On the API, Meta uses warnings, timed messaging blocks and account locks instead.
Not while the number is banned. WhatsApp only lets you access a backup after the phone number tied to it has been unbanned.
The API is the sanctioned way to message at scale, but the policies still apply. Messaging people who didn't opt in, misclassifying templates or collecting heavy negative feedback leads to warnings and messaging blocks, and repeated violations can end in removal. See the WhatsApp Business API guide.
